QuestionsCategory: Stock ScreeningStocks traded in singapore market but in us cureency
redvolver asked 2 years ago

I am looking at some stocks and realise that some of the stocks are traded in usd although they are in singapore market.
For example, hongkong land is traded in usd. Can I find out why ?
Is it a deliberate choice made by them because or certain advantage ? Like currency fluctuations?
I am using dbs vickers and I notice I can choose to trade in hongkong land (usd) using sgd although the default is usd.
Any pros and cons if I use sgd to trade instead ?
Will dividend (if any) be subjected to the exchange rate ? And since it is traded in usd, is it still stored under my cdp if I choose to trade under sgd?
Hope some one can help me out here.

I can answer some of the questions:

  • You can choose your settlement currency (how you pay for it), if you pay in SGD you will be subjected to the FX rate your brokerage gives you. DBS can convert first then pay I think. So now it depends on how good the FX rate are you getting.
  • Your dividend will be converted for you most of the time with an exchange rate but I think Vickers can receive USD dividends
  • Your stock is in CDP because it is dual listed here

Thanks Jieren!

Just called DBS Vickers 2 days ago. Even if I want to trade in sgd for stock in us currency, I will still need to convert my sgd money in multi currency account to usd first. In case anyone else is wondering :)

Hi Redvolver,
Jieren had mentioned most of the questions.
For Hong Kong Land case, they report their financial in USD and that may the reason why the management want to trade the stock in USD.
